What did the client need?

APT was invited to conduct a survey and provide a program of specialist deep cleaning and dry ice blasting at Graphic Packaging‘s Bristol packaging and printing plant. The company had recently undergone an internal audit that identified several areas for improvement, including build-up in difficult access areas that required industrial cleaning urgently. They were also looking to enhance their continuous improvement process.

The objective of the project was to help Graphic Packaging achieve a higher level of cleanliness and hygiene in their plant, leading to improved production efficiency, reduced downtime, and a safer working environment for their employees.

How did we approach it?

The plant at Bristol had previously attempted ice blasting with another company, which had been costly and unsuccessful, causing concern for Graphic Packaging to try it again. Therefore, they needed a reliable solution to clean the printing press machine. Additionally, the print presses were normally in constant use, making it challenging to find a short, coordinated shut down and shift period to avoid disruption to operations. Another significant challenge was to conduct the cleaning during a brief shutdown of the factory production, in a tight schedule.

What was the solution?

We suggested using their dry ice blasting technology, a non-abrasive cleaning process that uses CO2 pellets (ice) as a medium for removing surface contaminants. The solid pellets are blasted through a machine and sublime directly after impact on the surface, leaving no solid residue after blasting. This method avoids the use of chemicals, abrasive materials, high temperatures, or steam, making it eco-friendly and safe for use in various industries.

To address Graphic Packaging’s concerns, we proposed conducting a two-day trial of the ice blasting with their team, which would allow them to demonstrate their proficiency and methodology. The trial was successful, and the Bristol site managers approved the project for an immediate start. we brought in their specialist cryogenic dry ice blasting team to clean down and remove all the contaminated print rollers and gearing inside the large print presses.

APT used UltraMax 2020, a specialised degreaser to clean the external presses, quickly breaking down and emulsifying all the surface grease, oils, and other surface contaminants. The technicians then completed a thorough deep cleaning beneath the presses to remove all unwanted debris and unwanted paper fibers, removing any build-up that could pose a risk. The UltraMax 2020 degreaser was also used for industrial floor cleaning through the scrubber dryer.

What was the outcome?

APT carried out the program of works to meet and exceed client expectations. The project resulted in a higher level of cleanliness and hygiene in Graphic Packaging’s plant, leading to improved production efficiency, reduced downtime, and a safer working environment for their employees. Due to the success of the project, we have been awarded an ongoing planned program of works to ensure the progression and upgrading of further areas within the printing hall facility, helping the client deliver on the progression of their continuous improvement programs.

In conclusion, our dry ice blasting technology helped Graphic Packaging achieve a higher level of cleanliness and hygiene in their plant, leading to improved production efficiency, reduced downtime, and a safer working environment for their employees. Despite the initial concerns, our two-day trial demonstrated their proficiency and methodology, leading to a successful project outcome.
